Field Notes
Settlement milestones that survive a busy trading day
Settlement arguments usually start with vague language: “it should be done” or “the bank is slow.” Clear milestones reduce that fog.
Three states are enough for most desks
- Pending — Instruction sent; no confirmation yet.
- Partial — One rail finished; the other has not.
- Complete — Both crypto and fiat obligations for that ticket are closed.
Add a fourth state only if you truly need it (for example “held by compliance”). Extra states that nobody updates become noise.
Respect bank cutoff times
A KRW wire marked pending after the sending bank’s cutoff is not mysterious — it is waiting for the next window. Document that on the status board so traders do not treat it like a missing on-chain transfer.
Who owns the chase
Pick one ops owner per desk. When everyone “watches settlement,” unfinished legs sit in chat screenshots. Crypto Portfolio Desktop can show the status; a person still has to call the bank or the counterparty.
After you change a rail
New custody or a new banking partner means revisiting milestones. Run a short settlement tracking review before the next high-volume week rather than during it.
